Educational Goals:

This course was designed for mental health professionals interested in gaining a preliminary understanding of the theory and clinical application of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Participants will learn about the four DBT skills modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness and how to teach these to clients. Participants will learn how to integrate DBT concepts and interventions into their existing practice and seamlessly move between DBT and other treatment modalities. In this course, we will discuss case examples from the instructors’ practices and from participants’ clinical work. There will be live demonstrations, role-play, case consultation and other opportunities to gain feedback from DBT-trained therapists.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the distinction between DBT-informed therapy and Comprehensive DBT. Explain the difference to clients and their families.

  • Understand the ethical importance of describing and marketing DBT-informed therapy accurately

  • Assess client suitability for a DBT-informed approach and identify specific rule-outs.

  • Name and describe the four skills modules for Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness

  • Describe client distress levels using the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS) in order to identify when and how clients should apply different skills

  • Identify when and how to apply DBT therapist interventions such as extending, devil's advocate, validation and benevolent demanding into their existing practice
